Memorandum: The Animal health sector’s priorities for the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU

Brussels, 14 July 2023

The Slovak Republic presides over the Council of the European Union from 1 July to 31 December 2016. To mark the start of this new presidency, at a time when the EU is revising is legislation on veterinary medicinal products and medicated feed, IFAH-Europe sets out the animal health industry’s priorities for the next six months.

Europe’s animal health industry fully supports the Slovak Presidency’s objective of a competitive Europe. Work should focus on a framework that can support competitiveness and boost innovation, whilst helping to create jobs and growth in Europe. The animal health industry calls on the EU institutions to ensure that the new legislation is consistently based on European principles, science, and that decision-making happens on the basis of a risk-based approach. In particular, IFAH-Europe looks to the Presidency to advance the political progress made in the areas of:

  • Veterinary medicines
  • Medicated feed
  • Antimicrobial resistance
  • Animal welfare
